This on-site workshop is designed for people who want to devote a block of time to photography as they explore parts of magical Joshua Tree National Park. The photographic possibilities range from Joshua tree forests, to cactus flats, massive rock formations, and remnants of early mining activity. Throughout the day, the desert sun keenly reveals the special qualities of this beloved national park. This is an excellent season for photography in Joshua Tree: temperatures are mild, weather changes can produce dramatic skies, and numerous boulder outcroppings are accented with dashes of yellow from wildflowers. Field session locations include Barker Dam, Cholla Cactus Garden, Indian Cove, Live Oak Tank, Oasis of Mara, Ryan Ranch, Wall Street Mill and White Tank. A special "photographers only" visit to historic Keys Ranch is also planned. This 1910 homestead contains a fascinating assortment of historic items of visual interest: wooden ranch buildings, wagons, a windmill, rustic machinery, and ranch equipment. The workshop format consists of early morning and late afternoon field sessions, along with individualized assistance and a review of photographs. You will be able to roam through the area, working with tripods when desired, learning how to get the best results from equipment you already own. All camera formats are welcome. After the weekend, there will be one follow-up session on the UCI campus to share developed photographs and slides with your classmates and the instructor. Participants must provide their own camera equipment, make hotel or camping arrangements and transportation to Joshua Tree National Park. Motels are available in nearby Twentynine Palms. Complete information and schedule mailed to student before the workshop begins. Enrollment is limited and early registration is strongly advised. Refund deadline one week prior to start date.
